HR officer of International Labor Organization Ms. Sylvie Layous-Saltiel and Head of HR division of United Nations Office at Geneva Mr. Serguei Raskelei had face-to-face communication with students of Tsinghua University in two dialogue workshops held in the Kunshan room of Career Development Center, Tsinghua University on 26 October. The workshop was the first IO Dialogue activity organized by THUIO of Tsinghua University.

       On the morning of 26 October, Ms. Sylvie talked about how to network effectively with students. She gave unique analysis on the significance and importance of interpersonal relationships and elements to form interpersonal relationships. She also shared her personal methods which are very practical in dealing with interpersonal relationships. When sharing these methods, Ms. Sylvie encouraged students to join activity by a series of well-designed exercises so as to grasp skills to deal with interpersonal relationships in a proper way. Before ending her share, Ms. Sylvie also encouraged students to use these methods in their real life to network effectively.

       On the afternoon, Mr. Serguei gave a speech “A Glimpse at the UN Secretariat.” He started his speech by asking students what they think UN Secretariat is, and then introduced the distribution of UN organizations, recruitment requirements for certain professions and related personnel. Especially, he noted China is unrepresentative in UN, so the YPP program will be an important channel for applicants from China and students are encouraged to apply for the program actively. Then Mr. Serguei gave a detailed introduction about the procedures to apply for the position and how applicants will be selected. He also gave students practical suggestions.

       Students actively interacted with Mr. Serguei, discussing and sharing opinions about concepts such as core competence, multi-culture and team-work ability. They also put questions to Mr. Serguei on what they are interested in.

About International Labour Organization

International Labour Organization, ILO for short, was established in 1919 and became a special organization of the United States which is responsible for social and labor affairs in 1946. It is headquartered in Geneva and has 185 member states now. It has set up 5 regional offices and 40 state offices. Guy Ryder from Britain is the current general secretary. On the base of social justice, ILO aims to maintain a longstanding world peace and is dedicated to helping women and men in the world to get adequate chances for productive employment and decent work under conditions of freedom, equality, security and dignity. China is one of the founding countries of ILO. In 1971, the ILO council agreed the resolution to resume China's legal rights according to the resolution made on the General Assembly. The China government is one the 10 standing government members of ILO. All-China Federation of Trade Unions and China Enterprises Confederation are the secretary of ILO's worker group and associate secretary of employer group, respectively.

About United Nations Office at Geneva

United Nations Office at Geneva, UNOG for short, is an office of UN Secretariat in Geneva. It is a UN organization on a scale second to the UN Headquarters in New York, USA. The main office is located in the Palace of Nations which was the headquarters of League of Nations before. The general secretary of UNOG directly reports to Secretary General of the United Nations. UNOG acts as a representative organization for the Secretary General in Geneva, and is responsible for representation of and communication between permanent missions, host governments and other governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, research and academic institutions as well as other organizations set by common UN systems in Geneva, for promoting cooperation between these organizations and with other regional organizationsfor providing administrative support and other support for Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; for management of UN facilities in Geneva, and for providing meeting services for UN conferences held in Geneva and other cities or conferences held by each special agency according to long-term or special arrangements.
